Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is an industry standard suite of protocols that is designed for large networks consisting of network segments that are connected by routers. It is the protocol that is used on the Internet, which is the collection of thousands of networks worldwide that connect research facilities, universities, libraries, government agencies, private companies, and individuals. In it, perhaps one of the most important and well known protocols is Internet Protocol. It gives us the ability to uniquely identify each computer in a network or on the Internet. When a computer is connected to a network or the Internet, it is assigned a unique address. If you’re connecting to the Internet, chances are you’re given an IP automatically by your ISP. If you’re connecting to a LAN, then you’re either given the IP automatically or you manually configure the workstation with an assigned one. Optical Transport Network is a set of Optical Network Elements connected by optical fiber links, able to provide functionality of transport, multiplexing, switching, management, supervision and survivability of optical channels carrying client signals. Mainly this network is used at backbone layer of the telecommunication network where huge capacity of data is transported at long haul and beyond distance, including international long distance communication. The technology used in Optical transport network is the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) which is used to multiplex a numbers of wavelengths having data in the form of light signals and transmitted over a single optical fiber. Depending upon the requirement, the composite light signals can be amplified and regenerated to get the required quality of signal and also the number of wavelengths can be added or dropped at intermediate sites.
